Onomichi Sumiyoshi Fireworks Festival
Overview
Fireworks of the Sumiyoshi Shrine festival, said to date back to the mid-Edo period, held over the Onomichi Channel right in front of Onomichi, the town of slopes. About 13,000 shells fill the sky above the narrow, strait-like channel. The venue is a short walk along the waterfront street from JR Onomichi Station.
The show uses the sky above the Onomichi Channel as a giant screen, with star mines, underwater fireworks and music fireworks one after another. Around 20:00 you can also see a Shinto ritual in which lantern boats and a mikoshi portable shrine cross the sea.
