Chugoku & Shikoku: Weather & What to Wear Guide
Hiroshima, Okayama, Takamatsu, Matsuyama and other cities facing the Seto Inland Sea get lots of sunny days and little rain, with a mild climate all year round. By contrast, Matsue and Tottori on the Sea of Japan side see many cloudy and snowy days in winter, while Kochi on the Pacific side is rainy, with 2667mm of precipitation a year, and is prone to typhoons from summer into autumn. Up in the mountains, Iya is cooler than Tokushima City and stays relatively cool even in summer. This guide covers 10 areas popular with travelers, with monthly temperatures based on Japan Meteorological Agency climate normals, plus what to wear and what to see.

Best Time to Visit
Cherry Blossoms
The Japan Meteorological Agency's average blooming dates are March 22 in Kochi, March 24 in Matsuyama, March 25 in Hiroshima, March 28 in Okayama and Tokushima, and March 29 in Matsue and Tottori. At Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni, around 1500 cherry trees are usually at their best from late March to early April.
Cycling (Shimanami Kaido)
A route linking Onomichi and Imabari via 7 bridges spanning the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, about 70km at its shortest. Spring and autumn, which avoid the heat and the rainy season, are the easiest times to ride, with the scenery of the low-rainfall Seto Inland Sea at its best.
Festivals (Awa Odori & Yosakoi)
Kochi's Yosakoi Festival is held every year on August 9–12, and Tokushima City's Awa Odori usually takes place in mid-August. They're outdoors in midsummer, so don't forget a hat and plenty to drink.
Autumn Leaves
The colors usually peak on Mt. Daisen from late October to mid-November, at Miyajima's Momijidani Park from mid- to late November, and at Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu from mid-November to early December.
Hot Springs (Dogo)
In the cold season, Dogo Onsen in Matsuyama is the place to go. The Dogo Onsen Honkan main building completed its preservation and restoration work and reopened in full in July 2024.
Winter Delicacies (Oysters & Crab)
Tottori's matsuba crab fishing season runs from early November to March. Hiroshima oysters are shipped from October to May, and are at their most delicious in January and February.
