Tokyo gets plenty of sunny days even in winter, while summers are hot and humid. The popular day trips and overnight getaways — Hakone, Fuji Five Lakes, Nikko, Karuizawa and Kusatsu — sit at higher elevations, so on the same day they can be around 3–9°C cooler than central Tokyo. This guide covers 9 areas popular with travelers, with monthly temperatures based on Japan Meteorological Agency climate normals, plus what to wear and what to see.
The coldest month of the year, with clear skies and great views of Mt. Fuji
Still cold, but plum blossoms and early Kawazu cherry blossoms appear
Early spring with big temperature swings; cherry blossoms open late in the month
Cherry blossoms through early April, then peak spring sightseeing season
Fresh greenery and azaleas: the most comfortable time of year
Rainy season brings lots of wet days, and hydrangeas are at their best
Intense heat after the rainy season ends, with fireworks and summer festivals
The hottest month of the year: beating the heat is a must
Lingering heat, typhoons and autumn rain; autumn slowly arrives late in the month
Clear autumn skies and sightseeing season; fall colors start in Oku-Nikko
Autumn colors move from Hakone and Nikko to the ginkgo avenues of central Tokyo
Clear winter skies and illuminations; central Tokyo's autumn leaves last into early December
Tokyo high / low (climate normals).
Tokyo's cherry blossoms usually open in late March and are best from the end of March to early April. Timing varies by place: Izu's Kawazu cherry blossoms bloom in February, and Lake Kawaguchi's around mid-April.
The colors start at higher elevations and work their way down: Oku-Nikko in early October, Nikko's Irohazaka road in mid to late October, Hakone in November, and the ginkgo avenues of central Tokyo from late November to early December.
In winter the air is dry and clear, so Mt. Fuji is often sharply visible from observation decks in central Tokyo and from Lake Kawaguchi. In summer it's frequently hidden by clouds.
The Sumida River Fireworks Festival is usually held on the last Saturday of July. Daytime heat is intense, so we recommend focusing on evening events or pairing your trip with cooler Karuizawa or Nikko.
The hot springs of Hakone, Kusatsu and Izu are at their best in the cold season. Enjoy Kusatsu's Yubatake in the snow, or Izu's Kawazu cherry blossoms in February.
Not too hot, not too cold, and relatively little rain. Golden Week (Japan's national holiday period, late April to early May) is very crowded, so we recommend traveling just before or after it.
Average temperature normals (°C). Blue is colder, deeper orange is warmer. Tap a month to see the full guide.

For the most comfortable weather, we recommend May and November. For cherry blossoms, go from the end of March to early April; for autumn leaves, November (central Tokyo's ginkgo avenues peak from late November to early December). Watch out for the rainy season in June, intense heat from late July through August, and typhoons and autumn rain from September to early October.
It can, but not much. Average total snowfall is only about 4 cm in both January and February, and days with snow on the ground are few. Even a little snow can delay trains, though, so allow extra time on days when snow is forecast. Kusatsu, Oku-Nikko, Karuizawa and Lake Kawaguchi, on the other hand, do get snow cover in winter.
In the Kanto-Koshin region, the rainy season usually starts around June 7 and ends around July 19. There are many rainy days, but it doesn't rain all day every day. A folding umbrella is handy to have.
Comparing annual average temperatures with central Tokyo, Oku-Nikko (Lake Chuzenji) and Kusatsu are about 8°C cooler, Karuizawa about 7°C, Lake Kawaguchi about 5°C, and Hakone (around Gora) about 3°C. They're pleasant escapes from the summer heat, but in spring and autumn, bring one more layer than you would for central Tokyo.
Typhoons are most likely to approach the Kanto region from August to October, especially in September. Railways sometimes suspend service in advance, so during this period check the forecast before you set out and keep your schedule flexible.
