This guide covers 11 areas popular with travelers, with monthly temperatures and snow depth based on Japan Meteorological Agency climate normals, plus what to wear and what to see.

Autumn colors move from the mountains to the cities; first snow late in the month
The start of winter, and the illuminations begin

Sapporo high / low (climate normals).
Powder snow peaks in January and February. March brings more sunny days, perfect for spring skiing.
The Sapporo Snow Festival is usually held in early February, and drift ice off Abashiri & Shiretoko is best from February to early March.
Hokkaido's cherry blossoms bloom about a month later than on Honshu, peaking from late April to early May. Moss phlox (shibazakura) follows.
Furano's lavender is usually at its best from mid to late July, and the flower fields on Biei's hills burst into color too.
Autumn colors start on Mt. Asahidake in the Daisetsuzan mountains in mid-September and reach downtown Sapporo by late October.
Not too hot, not too cold, and you avoid the summer-holiday crowds. June has no rainy season, and September weather is settled.

It depends on what you want to do. For snow and skiing, go December–March; for flower fields, July; for autumn leaves, late September–October. For the most comfortable weather, we recommend June (no rainy season) and September (after the summer crowds).
January. Sapporo's average temperature is -3.2°C, and together with February (-2.7°C) it's the coldest time of year.
In Sapporo, snow usually starts to settle around late November and stays through March. In mountain areas like Niseko, around 1 m of snow remains into April.
August. Sapporo's average daily high is 26.4°C — much more comfortable than Honshu.
