History

History

It enshrines the three Munakata goddesses, Ichikishimahime, Tagorihime and Tagitsuhime, and is said to have been founded in the late 6th century. It became widely known in the mid-12th century, when Taira no Kiyomori became a devoted worshipper.

✨ Grand Torii Gate (Otorii)

A vermilion gate standing offshore from the shrine buildings. Depending on the tide, it either appears to float on the sea or can be approached on foot right up to its base.

✨ Corridors and Main Shrine

A complex of buildings connected by long corridors stretching over the sea. The gaps between the floorboards are said to be designed to reduce water pressure during high tides.

✨ Marodo Shrine

The largest of the auxiliary shrines, located near the entrance of the east corridor and designated a National Treasure.

✨ Hirabutai and Takabutai stages, and Tenjin Shrine

From the Hirabutai stage you can look straight out at the Grand Torii. Tenjin Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning, and some students preparing for exams offer ema (votive plaques) here.
