About

About this power spot

One of the Three Shrines of Chichibu, standing on Mount Mitsumine deep in the Chichibu mountains. Saitama Prefecture's website introduces it as "one of the leading power spots in the Kanto region," and it is also known for its rare triple torii gate and mountaintop views of seas of clouds and sunrises.

History

History

According to tradition, it began when Yamato Takeru enshrined the deities Izanagi and Izanami here. The wolves (mountain dogs) that guided him during his campaign to pacify the eastern lands are worshipped alongside the gods as divine messengers, and the faith in these messengers, called "Oinu-sama," spread to distant regions.

Highlights

Highlights

✨ Mitsu Torii (triple torii)

A very unusual torii gate made of three gates joined together.

✨ Richly colored worship hall

A worship hall in the gongen-zukuri style decorated with vivid carvings, strikingly beautiful against the green of the mountains.

✨ Stone pavement where a dragon appears

The stone pavement in front of the main hall is introduced as a highlight where the figure of a dragon god is said to emerge when water is poured on it.

✨ Seas of clouds and sunrise on the mountaintop

Because the shrine sits high on the mountain, you can see seas of clouds and sunrises when conditions are right.

Etiquette

Etiquette & things to know

  • ✓Bow once before passing through the torii gate, and avoid walking down the center of the approach.
  • ✓Purify your hands and mouth at the temizu fountain before praying.
  • ✓As a mountaintop shrine, the weather changes easily, and in winter you should be prepared for icy roads and snow, for example with traction devices.
  • ✓Do not damage the forest or plants on the grounds, and take your litter home.
