How to choose

Accommodation on Ishigaki falls into two main groups: the town center, home to the remote island ferry terminal, and resorts dotted along the coast. Stay in town if you plan day trips by boat to Taketomi or Iriomote, or on the west or north side of the island to enjoy Kabira Bay and the quieter northern seas.

Tips

Tips for choosing a hotel

  • •If you are taking day trips to Taketomi or Iriomote, staying in town within walking distance of the ferry piers makes morning departures easy.
  • •Another good combination is splitting your stay between town and a resort: island hopping in the first half, relaxing at the beach in the second.
  • •Local buses are infrequent in the north and west of the island, so decide where to stay based on whether you plan to rent a car.
