Overview

Overview

The annual festival of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Hida-Takayama, held every year on October 9 and 10. Eleven ornate yatai festival floats are lined up, with karakuri puppet performances in the shrine grounds, the Gojinko procession, and on the 9th, the floats pulled through town and the Yoi Matsuri evening festival, in which lantern-lit floats make their way through the streets. Its origins are said to date back to the era of the Kanamori clan, who ruled Hida (1585–1692). The Takayama Festival float events are a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and in 2016 they were inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list as part of ‘Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan.’
