Overview

Overview

An event with more than 300 years of history, held every year from September 1 to 3 in Yatsuo, Toyama City. It has been handed down as a festival to calm the damage of the winds and pray for a good harvest. Dancers in woven straw hats move gracefully through streets lit by bonbori lanterns, to the plaintive melodies of the shamisen and kokyu (bowed fiddle). There is no main venue; each of the 11 neighborhoods that carry on the tradition becomes a stage, with its own costumes, dances and songs.

Highlights

Highlights

The biggest draw is the sight of dancers and jikata musicians quietly making their way through Yatsuo’s streets of slopes, stone paving and lattice-fronted houses. Each of the 11 neighborhoods has a different feel to its dances and costumes, so walking through several to compare them is recommended. In some neighborhoods, tourists can also join a circle dance at set times.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓The indoor Enbujo performance hall is paid and requires advance purchase (in 2026, individual tickets went on sale on June 2 on JR West’s travel site tabiwa and sold out for all 3 days). If you want a guaranteed seat, buy early
  • ✓There are few rest areas, so a folding chair is handy
  • ✓In rain the dancing is not canceled but paused, and each neighborhood decides when to resume during breaks in the weather. Bring a raincoat rather than an umbrella
  • ✓The slopes are dark at night, so bring a flashlight. Wear comfortable shoes
  • ✓There are no convenience stores and few vending machines in the event area. Prepare drinks and snacks in advance and bring your own bottle
