Overview

Overview

A traditional event dating back to the time of feudal lord Date Masamune. Every year from August 6 to 8, the shopping streets of central Sendai are filled with colorful, lavish bamboo decorations. In 1927, a group of merchants revived the gorgeous Tanabata decorations, and today it is one of Tohoku’s leading summer festivals, drawing more than 2 million visitors each year. On the day before, August 5, the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival is held as an eve event.

Highlights

Highlights

The highlight is the sight of large fukinagashi streamers hanging from the arcade ceilings, lined up the length of the streets. Besides the streamers, each of the seven decorations carries a wish: tanzaku paper strips (progress in study and calligraphy), kamigoromo paper kimono (protection from misfortune and progress in sewing), orizuru paper cranes (family safety and long life), kinchaku purses (business prosperity), toami nets (good catches and harvests), and kuzukago baskets (cleanliness and thrift).
