Overview

Overview

An onsen area in the south of the Satsuma Peninsula, known for its sand-steamed baths (sunamushi). You can try this unique bathing style, in which you lie buried in warm sand wearing a yukata, on a day trip. There are also outdoor baths with views of Mt. Kaimon.

The specialty is sunamushi, in which you lie in a yukata in sand warmed by the hot spring. At Ibusuki Sunamushi Kaikan Saraku, the fee includes the yukata and covers both the sand bath and the hot spring, and there is a free foot bath in the plaza next door. From Tamatebako Onsen in the Yamagawa area, you can take in panoramic views of Mt. Kaimon and the East China Sea.
