Overview

Overview

A hot spring area in the center of the Izu Peninsula, with ryokan lining the Katsura River. It is said to have begun with Tokko no Yu, which legend says Kobo Daishi (Kukai) brought forth in 807. With the Hakoyu public bath and free footbaths, you can easily enjoy the hot springs even on a day trip.

Centered on Shuzenji Temple, said to have been founded by Kukai, historic sights such as the Bamboo Forest Path and Shigetsuden, associated with Hojo Masako, are all within walking distance. The Hakoyu public bath is an indoor bath featuring a stone tub and light from a skylight, and along the Katsura River there are two free footbaths, Kawarayu and Sugi no Yu. At night, you can stroll along the illuminated Bamboo Forest Path.
