Overview

Overview

Kogano Falls, on the outer caldera rim above the Aso Valley, is a pair of “husband and wife” falls: the male fall, about 80 m high, and the female fall, about 100 m high. In midwinter, cold winds blowing from the Aso Valley freeze them into a powerful frozen waterfall.

Highlights

Highlights

The ice covering the rock face is a natural sculpture of frozen water, sometimes called “ice flowers.” During the winter period there is also an evening illumination, when you can see the lit-up frozen waterfall. In early spring the sound of the ice cracking and falling echoes through the area, and it is said to announce the arrival of spring in Aso.
