Overview

Overview

A winter Shinto ritual held from mid-November to early February the following year in about 20 villages in Takachiho Town. A private home or community hall becomes the kagura-yado (kagura venue), the local guardian deity is welcomed, and 33 kagura dances are performed through the night as an offering. It was designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1978. Dates are set by each village and are usually announced around October.

Highlights

Highlights

The 33 dances, performed in a different order in each village, continue through the night, and the dance before the Amano-Iwato (Heavenly Rock Cave) is said to be the origin of kagura. Villagers prepare the kagura-yado, and visitors are welcomed as ichiya-ujiko, ‘parishioners for one night,’ letting you experience the atmosphere of a living village festival that is not put on for tourists.
