A traditional event held on August 16 during Obon in Miyazu Bay, near Amanohashidate, one of the Three Views of Japan. After spirit boats and about 10,000 red and white oikake lanterns drift on the sea, fireworks light up the night sky. The prayers of a custom dating back to the Edo period blend with the atmosphere of a local summer festival.
The highlight is the dreamlike scene of spirit boats from families observing their first Obon being lit on the sea and drifting across Miyazu Bay with red and white lanterns. Fireworks follow the lantern floating, and the evening ends with a Bon dance.
