About

About this power spot

A shrine made up of five shrines, Okusha, Chusha, Hokosha, Kuzuryusha and Hinomikosha, scattered at the foot of the sacred Mount Togakushi. Connected to the Ama-no-Iwato myth, it is introduced on the official tourism sites of Nagano City and Nagano Prefecture as "a power spot of myth and faith." The "Five Shrines Pilgrimage," walking along cedar-lined approaches to visit all five, is well known.

History

History

It is connected to the myth in which Ame-no-Tajikarao-no-Mikoto opened the Ama-no-Iwato cave where Amaterasu Omikami had hidden herself, and a legend also says that the cave's rock door flew here and became Mount Togakushi. In ancient times Kuzuryu no Okami, a deity of water and abundant harvests, was worshipped here, and later it flourished as a major training center of Shugendo. Following the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the early Meiji era, it has continued to the present as a Shinto shrine.
