Nagano, Zenkoji, Jigokudani Monkey Park, Shibu Onsen, Shiga Kogen
An area covering Nagano City, which grew up around Zenkoji Temple, plus Yudanaka and Shibu Onsen, Jigokudani Monkey Park at 850 m — famous for its hot spring-bathing monkeys — and Shiga Kogen. Nagano City has an inland climate with little rain — 965 mm a year — hot summers and cold winters. The mountain hot spring towns and Shiga Kogen are colder than Nagano City.

The monkeys at Jigokudani Monkey Park only bathe in the hot spring during the cold winter. You can watch them soaking in the water amid the snow.
For cherry blossoms
On average, Nagano's cherry blossoms open on April 11 and reach full bloom around April 16, bringing spring color to the area around Zenkoji.

A park in the mountains of Yamanouchi, Nagano Prefecture, where you can observe wild Japanese macaques up close. It's famous for its monkeys bathing in hot springs in winter. The entrance is about a 30-minute walk along a mountain path from the parking lot or bus stop, so wear shoes and clothing suited to the season.
