Overview

Overview

The grand spring festival of Nikko Toshogu, the World Heritage shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. As a Shinto ritual, it is held on fixed dates every year, May 17 and 18. On the 17th, yabusame (horseback archery) is performed as an offering on the main approach, and on the 18th, the Procession of 1,000 Samurai Warriors — over 1,000 participants including armored warriors — travels up and down the approach.

Highlights

Highlights

The Procession of 1,000 Samurai Warriors on the 18th recreates the procession that moved Ieyasu's spirit from Kunozan to Nikko. It's a spectacular sight as more than 1,200 participants — armored warriors and bearers of bows, spears, and matchlock guns — escort three mikoshi (portable shrines) up and down the roughly 1 km approach. The Yaotome and Azuma-asobi dances offered at the Otabisho are also well worth seeing.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓Because the dates are fixed, the festival falls on weekdays in some years. In 2027 it's Monday and Tuesday
  • ✓Yabusame is viewed from the Sanbutsudo Hall side of the main approach. Flash photography is strictly prohibited, as it startles the horses
  • ✓Watching the processions is free. Visiting the shrine buildings (such as the Yomeimon Gate) requires a separate admission fee
  • ✓A day trip from Tokyo is possible, but to enjoy the morning events without rushing, it's best to stay the night before in Nikko or Kinugawa
  • ✓In autumn (October 17) there is also a grand autumn festival that features the Procession of 1,000 Samurai Warriors
