Overview

Overview

One of Hokkaido’s best-known hot spring areas, about 1 hour 10 minutes from New Chitose Airport by direct bus. Its appeal lies in the abundant water from Jigokudani (Hell Valley) and its wide variety of spring types. Many of the large hotels offer day-use bathing.

Jigokudani, at the far end of the hot spring town, is an explosion crater about 450m across at the foot of Mt. Hiyori. About 10,000 tons of hot water a day well up from the steaming valley and are piped to the hotels and ryokan in town. The tourism association lists nine spring types, including sulfur springs, salt springs and alum springs, and the area has been known as a therapeutic bathing spot since the Edo period.
