Overview

Overview

A fireworks display launched every night for about half the year, from spring to autumn, at Toyako Onsen. A boat loaded with fireworks moves about 2 km across the lake while launching around 450 shells, so you can enjoy the fireworks reflected on the water from anywhere in the hot spring town. 2026 marks its 45th year.

Highlights

Highlights

Because the launch boat moves along the lakeshore, you can see the fireworks up close from all over the hot spring town — from hotel rooms, footbaths, and lakeside walking paths. The "upside-down fireworks" reflected on the calm lake are another draw.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓The fireworks last only about 20 minutes from 20:45 each night, so if you're heading to the lakeshore after dinner, set off around 20:30. Many onsen inns let you watch the fireworks from lake-view rooms or inside the building
  • ✓To watch from the lake, the Toyako Kisen fireworks viewing cruise (departs 20:35, about 40 min) is convenient. Check fares and operating days with Toyako Kisen in advance
  • ✓There's almost no way back after the fireworks on a day trip from Sapporo, so staying a night at Toyako Onsen is recommended
  • ✓Nights in April–May and October are cold, so a jacket is a must if you're watching from the lakeshore
  • ✓The display may be canceled on days with unstable wind direction or speed, so check the tourism association's information on the day

Weather & what to wear

Evening temperatures
Nights around Lake Toya can drop to around 5–10°C in April–May and October, and are around 17–20°C even in July–August (approximate figures based on JMA normals from nearby observation points)
