Ishiwarizakura (Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree)

Highlights
Said to be more than 360 years old, it was designated a National Natural Monument in 1923 (Taisho 12). The unusual sight of its trunk rising from the crack in the rock is one of Morioka’s signature spring scenes. Located in central Morioka within walking distance of Morioka Station, it is a single cherry tree that’s easy to stop by while sightseeing in the city.
