Hakodate Port Festival
Hokkaido ・ Hakodate
Usually August 1–5 (fireworks on the first day, parades on the 2nd and 3rd)
Hachimanzaka, a stone-paved slope running straight down to Hakodate Port, is one of Hakodate’s signature hillside views. In winter, the snow-dusted slope and harbor view are joined by illuminated street trees that create a romantic night scene.
The amount of snow varies from year to year. The illumination usually runs from December to around late February
Seasons are typical guides. Snow, ice and drift ice depend heavily on each year’s weather.
From the top of the slope you can see Hakodate Port and the Mashu Maru, a former Seikan ferry, at the end of the straight road. On winter nights the street trees are decorated with illumination, making it one of the most striking scenes in the Motomachi area.

In 2025–26, Hachimanzaka was lit from sunset to 22:00
