Geibikei in Ichinoseki, Iwate, is a gorge designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, with rock walls over 100 m high lining the Satetsu River. In winter, a boatman poles a roofed “kotatsu boat,” fitted with heated kotatsu tables, up and back through the snowy gorge.

Looking up at snow-covered cliffs while warming yourself at a kotatsu is a pleasure unique to winter. The round trip takes about 90 minutes and includes time to go ashore and stroll. There is also a course where you can enjoy a winter-only kinagashi hot pot on the boat (reservation required).
