Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival
Tohoku ・ Hirosaki
Usually late April to early May (timed to the cherry blossom season; April 10 – May 5 in 2026)
2027: Apr 16 (Fri) – May 5 (Wed, holiday), 20 days
Hirosaki Park, famous for its cherry blossoms, offers views of snow-wrapped Hirosaki Castle and its outer moat in winter. Every winter, the Winter Sakura illumination lights the snow-laden cherry branches in pink, and the Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival is held in February.
How the snow clings to the branches depends on temperature and snowfall. Check the official announcement for the 2026–27 illumination period

Seasons are typical guides. Snow, ice and drift ice depend heavily on each year’s weather.
Along about 500 m of the outer moat, LEDs light the snow-covered cherry branches a soft pink, creating a scene like cherry trees in full bloom on a winter night. The colder the night and the thicker the snow on the branches, the more they are said to look like full bloom. During the Snow Lantern Festival, snow lanterns and mini kamakura (snow huts) made by local residents decorate the park.
