Asahiyama Zoo Penguin Walk

December–MarchAsahikawa & Biei
Search by dates and destination
Overview

Overview

A signature winter event at Asahiyama Zoo, where king penguins and others waddle in a line along the snow-covered paths. It helps the penguins get exercise in winter and is inspired by the habit of wild king penguins heading to the sea in groups. It takes place only when there is snow on the ground.

When
Usually held daily from mid- to late December (once there is enough snow) until around mid-March
Venue
Asahikawa City Asahiyama Zoo (along the path from the Penguin House to around the Event Hall)
Highlights

Highlights

The appeal is watching the penguins march across the snow so close you feel you could reach out and touch them. The route is about 500 m round trip, and their free-spirited behavior — stopping now and then or wandering out of line — is part of the charm.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓The start date of the walks depends on snowfall and is announced each year in mid- to late December on the zoo's official website and official X. If your trip is early in the season, check that the walks have started before you go
  • ✓Walks may be canceled or changed without notice depending on the penguins' health and the condition of the route
  • ✓For a good viewing spot, get to the route 20–30 minutes before the start. The 11:00 walk in particular draws many tour groups and gets crowded
  • ✓Admission is 1,000 yen for adults and free for junior high school age and under. At the ticket window you can pay by cash, credit card, or QR code payment, and tickets are also sold as KKday web tickets and at convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson)
  • ✓The zoo is closed from December 30 to January 1. Plan carefully if traveling over the New Year holidays
