Overview

The annual grand festival of Hokkaido Jingu Shrine, known affectionately by locals as "Sapporo Matsuri," an early-summer festival with over 100 years of history. On the final day, following the eve festival and the main festival, a procession of more than 1,000 people in Heian-period attire parades through central Sapporo with four mikoshi (portable shrines) and festival floats, while nearly 300 food stalls line Nakajima Park.

Highlights

The highlight is the mikoshi procession on the final day, 6/16, when a procession in Heian-period costume, accompanied by four mikoshi and floats, spends the whole day making its way through the city. In the evening, you can soak up the atmosphere of an old-fashioned fair at Nakajima Park, with about 300 food stalls and even a haunted house.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓The mikoshi procession winds through central Sapporo over many hours during the day. Check the route and times on the route map Hokkaido Jingu publishes each year; waiting around Odori or in front of Sapporo Station gives you a good view
  • ✓For the fair atmosphere, visit Nakajima Park from evening into the night. It gets especially crowded at night, so allow plenty of time
  • ✓Hokkaido Jingu is next to Maruyama Park, so you can combine a shrine visit with a stroll in the park
  • ✓At a shrine, bow once before the torii gate and avoid walking in the center of the approach. Purify your hands and mouth at the water basin, then pray with two bows, two claps, and one bow
  • ✓The Hokkaido Jingu parking lot is extremely crowded during the festival, so come by subway
