Overview

Overview

A winter festival at Sounkyo Onsen, the gateway to Daisetsuzan National Park, where about 30 ice structures of all sizes fill a roughly 12,000 m² site on the bank of the Ishikari River. Highlights include ice buildings over 10 m tall, an observation deck, and an ice shrine. At night everything is lit up in seven colors, and the festival is certified as a "Japan Night View Heritage" site.

When
Usually late January to early March (about 6 weeks)
Venue
Ice Waterfall Festival special site at Sounkyo Onsen (Ishikari River bank, Sounkyo Onsen, Kamikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido)
Highlights

Highlights

You can look out over the site from the observation deck on the main ice sculpture, modeled on Mt. Kurodake in the Daisetsuzan range. Unique touches include the "Hyobaku Shrine," where you pray by sticking a coin offering onto the ice, and "Ice BAL," where you can taste Kamikawa Taisetsu Shuzo sake inside an ice building. During the festival, fireworks light up the night sky and are reflected in the ice.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓On weekdays the site opens at 17:00, so if you arrive around midday, pass the time with day-use bathing in the hot spring town. On weekends and holidays you can enter from 11:00
  • ✓The support fee (admission) is 1,000 yen for junior high school age and up, free for elementary school age and under (2026 example). Tickets can also be bought online via KKday from the official website
  • ✓Take a commemorative photo at the photo house on site and you get an "Extreme Cold Certificate" (2026 example)
  • ✓This is a mountain hot spring town and nights are extremely cold. Gloves and shoe grips are sold on site, but come fully prepared for the cold
  • ✓A day trip from Asahikawa is possible, but buses are infrequent, so staying a night at Sounkyo Onsen to enjoy the illuminations and hot springs at a relaxed pace is recommended

Getting back
  • Local buses from Sounkyo are infrequent, and there are almost no buses back to Asahikawa after an evening visit. If you're doing a day trip, be sure to check the return bus times (the Dohoku Bus timetable was revised in July 2026)
  • In winter, National Route 39 and the Sekihoku Pass area are prone to ice and blizzards. If you're not used to driving on winter roads, taking the bus is safer
