Hakodate Port Festival
Hokkaido ・ Hakodate
Usually August 1–5 (fireworks on the first day, parades on the 2nd and 3rd)
A park built on the site of Goryokaku, a star-shaped Western-style fort, and Hakodate’s best-known cherry blossom spot. About 1,500 trees, mostly Somei-yoshino, line the star-shaped moat and earthworks, peaking around the Golden Week holidays.
Bloom dates shift with each year’s temperatures. Check the bloom updates on Hakobura, Hakodate City’s official tourism website, for the latest conditions

From the observation deck of the neighboring Goryokaku Tower (about 90 m high), you can look down on the whole star shape outlined in cherry blossoms. The walking path along the moat (about 1,800 m around) and the path on top of the earthen ramparts, with blossoms inside the fort on one side and along the moat on the other, are also popular. Weeping cherry and yamazakura are planted around the reconstructed Hakodate Magistrate’s Office. The sample tree used to observe Hakodate’s cherry blossom bloom is also in the park (near the bridge at the rear gate).
