Overview

One of the Kansai region's signature summer fireworks displays, held off Otsu Port on Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake. In 2026, the 40th anniversary edition was held on August 6, with about 12,000 fireworks launched over the lake. Fireworks reflected on the water and the wide, open staging possible only on a lake are its hallmarks.

Tips

Tips for travelers

  • ✓Much of the lakeshore around Otsu Port becomes a paid viewing area; in 2026, paid seats started at 7,500 yen for a chair seat. If you want a guaranteed view, buy in advance through the spring lottery or general sales from late May
  • ✓The Hama-Otsu area gets very crowded well before the fireworks, so it's best to arrive early in the evening and enjoy nearby restaurants and sightseeing
  • ✓The official website publishes a route map (Japanese and English PDF) before the event. Download it in advance, as the site gets heavy traffic on the day
  • ✓It is only about 30 minutes by train from central Kyoto, so you can stay in Kyoto and make a day trip to see it
  • ✓In stormy weather it is canceled with no postponement (2026 rules). If the weather looks uncertain, check the official website before setting off
