Overview

Overview

A festival with about 900 years of history, held at Kitano Tenmangu every year on February 25, the anniversary of the death of Sugawara no Michizane, who dearly loved plum blossoms. Special offerings decorated with sprigs of plum are presented in his memory, and in honor of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Grand Kitano Tea Ceremony, geiko and maiko from Kamishichiken host a grand outdoor tea ceremony (nodate).

Highlights

The grand outdoor tea ceremony, where geiko and maiko from Kamishichiken prepare tea on the grounds among the plum blossoms, and the scenery of about 1,500 plum trees of some 50 varieties beginning to reach their best. It coincides with the Tenjin-ichi fair held on the 25th of every month, so stalls fill the entire shrine grounds.
