The heat lingers. Kawadoko riverside dining on the Kamo River and in Kibune until late September
September in Kansai is a season when the summer heat lingers. Kyoto's high is 29.2°C, and in early September many days still top 30°C. Typhoons and the autumn rain front also make it a rainy month, and the Kii Peninsula in particular can see heavy downpours. Late in the month, mornings and evenings gradually cool down, and moon-viewing events for the harvest moon (chushu no meigetsu) are held in many places.
Temperature, precipitation, snow and sunshine are climate normals (1991-2020). Sunset is for September 15.

Many kawadoko along the Kamo River and in Kibune stay open until September, and September, when the heat eases, is a great time to go.
A Kyoto summer tradition from early summer to autumn, when restaurants build wooden dining platforms over or beside the river and serve meals on them. Along the Kamo River in the city center they are called "noryo yuka," with about 90 restaurants lining the west bank between Nijo and Gojo. In Kibune in northern Kyoto they are called "kawadoko," and you can enjoy the cool air on platforms set right above the mountain stream.
