The last autumn leaves in early December. Joya no Kane at Chionin and elsewhere on New Year's Eve
December marks the real start of winter in Kansai. Kyoto's high is 11.6°C and mornings are around 3.5°C. In early December you can still catch the last of Kyoto's autumn leaves, and from mid-December the winter air sets in. The streets of Osaka and Kobe sparkle with illuminations, and at year's end temple bells ring out for Joya no Kane. Snow starts falling in Amanohashidate in the north and around the northern shores of Lake Biwa: it's the season for winter crab and hot springs.
Temperature, precipitation, snow and sunshine are climate normals (1991-2020). Sunset is for December 15.
