Usually the fourth Saturday of January (fireworks from around 18:15 in the evening, ignition around 18:30)
Mount Yoshino in central Nara Prefecture is one of Japan’s foremost cherry blossom spots, with about 30,000 cherry trees covering the mountain, and is part of the World Heritage site “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.” The cherry trees have long been planted in connection with the Shugendo faith, and they bloom in succession from the foot of the mountain up toward the top.
Because of differences in elevation, the bloom moves up from Shimo Senbon to Oku Senbon. In 2026, full bloom was Apr 1 at Shimo Senbon, Apr 2 at Naka Senbon, Apr 4 at Kami Senbon and Apr 9 at Oku Senbon (Yoshino Visitors Bureau)
Peak times are typical guides. Blooming and full bloom shift with each year’s temperatures.
Mostly Shiro-yamazakura, the trees are known for peaking at different times by elevation, from Shimo Senbon (lower) to Naka Senbon (middle), Kami Senbon (upper) and Oku Senbon (inner). Named trees are scattered around too, such as the “Katte-zakura” behind Katte Shrine, the “Yonhon-zakura” (Four Cherry Trees) at Kinpusenji Temple’s Zaodo Hall and the “Tennin-zakura” at Chikurin-in.
