Every year on February 25 (Feb 25 in 2027)
A walking path of about 2 km running along a branch of the Lake Biwa Canal from near Ginkakuji Temple toward Nanzenji Temple. It takes its name from the philosopher Kitaro Nishida, who walked here lost in thought, and it has been selected as one of Japan’s 100 Best Roads. In spring, cherry trees on both sides of the canal form a tunnel of blossoms.
Bloom dates shift with each year’s temperatures. Check the “Sakura Dayori” bloom reports on Kyoto Kanko Navi for the latest conditions. The JMA normals for Kyoto’s sample tree (Somei-yoshino) are first bloom on Mar 26 and full bloom on Apr 4
Peak times are typical guides. Blooming and full bloom shift with each year’s temperatures.
About 400 cherry trees, including Somei-yoshino and Oshima-zakura, bloom along about 2 km, creating a tunnel of blossoms. Because some of the trees are associated with the Japanese-style painter Kansetsu Hashimoto, they are also called “Kansetsu-zakura.” Another highlight is “hana-ikada” (flower rafts), when fallen petals drift on the surface of the canal.
