Every year on February 25 (Feb 25 in 2027)
A World Heritage temple whose “Omuro-zakura” cherry trees are designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty. Known as late bloomers in Kyoto, they peak around the time cherry blossoms at other famous spots have fallen.
They bloom late, and Kyoto Kanko Navi notes full bloom around Apr 20. According to Ninna-ji, bloom varies greatly with each year’s weather and is hard to predict, so check the Ninna-ji bloom information before you go
Peak times are typical guides. Blooming and full bloom shift with each year’s temperatures.
There are about 200 trees with whitish flowers, such as the Kurumagaeshi and Ariake varieties. They are short and branch out from near the base, so you can enjoy the blossoms at eye level. Because of their shape they are also called “Otafuku-zakura,” and they have been loved by ordinary people since the Edo period and celebrated in many waka poems.
